Wednesday Night April 25th students involved with Intervarsity, Asian American Christian Fellowship, the Newman Center, Navigators, Epic and Cru (Campus Crusade), will be hosting a Unity Night for Cal Poly on Dexter Lawn. 

According to the student coordinators, “the event will include worship, speakers, and fellowship, and will showcase the diversity and unity of the body of Christ.”

Students would LOVE to have a handful of Christian faculty share a short (6-8 minute) testimony during the event. Please contact us – or Ondy Pagan (involved with Epic) at thelandbeforethyme-at-gmail.com if you’re interested.

And while the event is scheduled from 6-9pm, please feel the freedom to “come when you can, leave when you must.”

 Christos Anesti!

In the 2002 film My BIg Fat Greek Wedding, lead character Toula Portokalos explains to Ian, her non-Greek fiancee, that “Christos Anesti” (a traditional greeting within the Orthodox Church) is Greek for “Happy Easter.”

 Well, not exactly. Christos Anesti doesn’t really translate Happy Easter. Christos Anesti literally means Christ is risen.

Almost two thousand years ago, Christians in the early church greeted each other with the triumphant Christos Anesti! Christ is risen – He is risen indeed!

Dr. Dallas Willard will be speaking at the “Winds of Change” Christian faculty conference in Southern California Saturday February 25th. 

A Professor in the School of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, Dr. Willard is one of the premiere Christian thinkers and speakers in the world, and has authored several books on the Christian life and spiritual integration including Knowing Christ Today (2009), The Great Omission (2006) and The Divine Conspiracy, which was selected as Christianity Today’s “Book of the Year” in 1999.

Dr. Willard is in the unique position of speaking both as an evangelical Christian scholar and as a professor at secular university campus.

In addition to plenary sessions and discussion groups, the conference will also include a panel focused on how faculty on other campuses are reaching out to colleagues and students.

Crestmont College is a private Christian conference center overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Rancho Palos Verdes. Optional on-site lodging is available Friday and/or Saturday night.

The $80 registration price ends Wednesday night Feb 8th. On the 9th, the fee increases by $15 – if space is available. This promises to be an outstanding conference and hope you’ll consider joining us.

Professional illusionist Jim Munroe will be performing and speaking Wednesday night February 1st in the Performing Arts Center in a campus outreach called “The Maze.”

Munroe has preformed on hundreds of university campuses to packed houses (this past week he was at both UCLA and UC Irvine). 

According to their website www.whatisthemaze.com “In stark contrast to the typical ‘magic show’ , MAZE presents a unique blend of illusion, intuition, psychology, humor, mystery and danger. The events that happen during a MAZE show leave audiences entertained, bewildered, disturbed and inadvertently pondering the question “How can I know what is really true?”

The goal of the evening is not just to entertainment, but to encourage audiences to think about their own spritual journey and to consider the claims of Jesus Christ. Here’s some thoughts from a student at the University of San Diego on what to expect.

There are three ways you can be involved:                                                                                   1st  – pray for this outreach and it’s impact in the lives of students.                                        2nd – encourage students to consider attending.                                                                       3rd – consider attending yourself. This would be an excellent event to bring you own kids to (Jr. High School age and older).

Please note that because of limited seating in the PAC, this is event will not be advertised to the larger community and is limited to the Cal Poly campus community (and their families).

Tuesday January 10th, 2012 we have the privilege of hosting Dr. Mary Poplin on campus. Dr. Poplin is a Professor in the School of Educational Studies Claremont Graduate University) and will be speaking as part of the larger 2012 Veritas Forum.

Dr. Poplin will be our featured guest at a special faculty lunch from 12:00-1:00pm in UU 204 (Chumash Auditorium, East Wing) and then again at a larger student/faculty audience at 8pm. 

A native of Texas, Mary Poplin earned her Ph.D. in Education from the University of Texas. She began her career teaching elementary school and special education, later becoming a professor at Claremont Graduate University in California where she was director of the Teacher Education Program, 1985-1995 and Dean of the School of Educational Studies, 2000-04. 

Between those positions Poplin worked with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta. Her book, “Finding Calcutta: What Mother Teresa Taught Me About Meaningful Work and Service” (InterVarsity Press, 2008) highlights her experience there.

She has hosted a Summit on Accountability and Social Justice which sought to define the major principles inherent in accountability systems in the U.S. that have been found to be effective in closing the achievement gap between rich and poor and between racial and ethnic groups. She is the author of “Voices from the Inside: A Report on Schooling from Inside the Classroom” (1992). More recently, Poplin has begun to work on the application of the intellectual, social, and psychological principles of the Judeo-Christian worldview as they apply to higher education, particularly among culturally and linguistically diverse peoples and the poor.

Wednesday night January 11th, Dr. Poplin will be followed by a dialogue between Dr. Greg Ganssle (Lecturer in Philosophy, Rivendell Institute at Yale University) and Keith Abney (Lecturer in Philosophy, Cal Poly) on the topic “What Does It Mean To Be Good”?

Dr. Poplin will be speaking on her experiences with Mother Teresa and her subsequent book Finding Calcutta: What Mother Teresa Taught Me About Meaningful Work and Service (2008, IVP).
